One Week
Matan Golan's solo exhibition bears the name of Buster Keaton's silent movie "One Week" from 1920. The protagonist of the film is a newly married man who tries to build a self-assembled house kit in a single week, which the young couple received as a wedding gift. At the end of the week, after a choreography of nonsensical constructional errors, abundant stunts and manipulations that were being enforced on the hero's body and the new home, the house falls apart.
Golan adopts the image of the anti-hero and the comic-tragic character of Buster Keaton as the spiritual father of his works. The exhibition consists of seven sculptures and light projections, which lay out the attempts, the failures and even the impossibility of male nesting, as an existential, local and artistic possibility.
Matan Golan (1985) lives and works in Tel Aviv. Graduate of Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, winner of the Presser Award for Video Art 2015. Art teacher at the Interdisciplinary High School for Arts and Sciences, Hadera.
Golan participated in group exhibitions and festivals in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Boston. In 2007, he participated in the BNB program at the Barbur Gallery in Jerusalem, participated in the "Southern Lights" festival in Be'er Sheva, and created a video-art work for a dance performance by Sally-Anne Friedland at the Suzanne Dellal Center in Tel Aviv.
Vision and Failure – Annual Theme for 2018
This exhibition will be the 4th of 2018, which will consist entirely of exhibitions revolving around the theme 'Vision and Failure'. By dealing with the chosen subject, Alfred Gallery seeks to expand the field of meanings that are embedded between the words: vision, success, failure, intent and improvisation, raise questions about the factors that define these concepts, and break up centers of power.
The selected exhibitions will be accompanied by performance events, lectures and screenings, and during the summer, a residency program will take place hosting several artists who will create in the gallery space in cooperation with the gallery visitors.
In the series 'Vision and Failure', Alfred Gallery seeks to examine the possible opportunities inherent in failure: experimentalism, fragility, weakness, indecision, confusion. Alfred Gallery seeks to direct the spotlight to daring and risk taking activities inherent in the word failure. This is in order to present additional nuances in the experience of art making and the observing experience.
