On Thursday April 2, 2015, Alfred – A Cooperative Institute for Arts and Culture, will open a double exhibition titled ‘Anagoge’, which will feature the works of Hili Greenfeld and Peter Jacob Maltz.
Anagoge is a Greek word suggesting a "climb" or "ascent" upwards. The anagogical is a method of spiritual interpretation of literal statements or events, literally or prosaic, to a much more sublime and divine aspect.
Greenfeld and Maltz explore art as an experience that creates a feeling of spiritual elevation, as they focus on the worldly and the prosaic, on the ritual and the iconic, as a part of our daily life.
The connection between the artists was created during Greenfeld's graduation exhibition at Bezalel, and both artists have been since in an artistic dialogue. The dialogue has matured into an idea to establish a joint exhibition concerning tactile materials, the relations between the artistic space to the religious space, and imaginary, allegorical and historical journeys.
In the exhibition Greenfeld will display paintings surrounded by objects built especially for them. The objects become an altar for the paintings, thus creating a back and forth movement between the paintings and the objects.
The works combine symbolism from different cultures (Egyptian, Mongolian, Jewish, and pagan) in order to create a ritual atmosphere which is not derived from any specific culture, but universal, enigmatic. The objects were created using excessive layers of oil paints, pigments, sand, artificial plants, polystyrene, and more.
Maltz will exhibit an installation titled Nature Quest which is a complex sculptural system which creates a kind of three-dimensional map, placed on a horizontal wooden stand. The large amount of the materials such as clay, glass, synthetic and real plants, fabrics, candles, plaster, concrete, etc., were transformed using assemblage, modeling, carving and casting. The appearance obtained is of a space that brings together the allegorical and spiritual with the concrete and the daily.
Juxtaposed to the installation is a series of paintings under the same title, Nature Quest, which were created after the completion of the installation. The paintings create an allegorical and spiritual narrative, over the world created in the installation.
Hili Greenfeld is an interdisciplinary artist, graduate of Bezalel, has a master's and bachelor's degree and graduated with honors. She studied in Slade, London as an exchange student, and participated in Alma College colleague's course on a full scholarship. Greenfeld was one of the founders of the Association Koresh 14 for the Arts in Jerusalem. In her art she deals with the elusive essence of history and memory, and her works seem like relics of a world that never existed.
Peter Jacob Maltz is a sculptor and a draftsman, has a master's degree from the Royal College London, and graduated with honors from the undergraduate program in Bezalel. Maltz won the Young Artist Fellowship, artist-teacher and artist-in-the-community prize, and initiated projects of a social nature, such as the construction of statues "meeting points" in Jerusalem and in Augsburg, Germany.

בוגרת בצלאל תואר שני, ובצלאל תואר ראשון בהצטיינות שם קיבלה פרס לורן ומיטשל פרסר. למדה בסלייד לונדון במסגרת חילופי סטודנטים. למדה ספרות השלמה לתואר שני באוניברסיטת תל אביב, והשתתפה במסלול העמיתים של מכללת עלמא על מלגה מלאה. הילי היא אחת ממייסדות עמותת כורש 14 לתרבות ואמנות בירושלים. הציגה התערוכות בארץ ובעולם כגון לאסאל קולג׳ בסינגפור. עבודותיה נעות בין ציור – לציור מרחבי, לפיסול הבנוי משכבות עודפות שמייצרות נראות של זמן שעבר. העיסוק במהות החמקמקה של היסטוריה וזיכרון באים לידי ביטוי בגוף עבודות שנדמה כשרידים של עולם שמעולם לא היה קיים.
פיטר יעקב מלץ (נ. 1973 חי ועובד בת"א)
פסל ורשם. מרצה לאמנות בבצלאל. בוגר MA בפיסול מהרויאל קולג' בלונדון ו BFA בהצטיינות מבצלאל. מרבה להציג בארץ ובאירופה. עבודותיו באוספים חשובים כגון מוזיאון ישראל, קרן ריינולדס ואוסף יגאל אהובי. זכה בפרסים רבים ביניהם, פרס אמן צעיר, מלגת אמן מורה ואמן בקהילה. יזם פרויקטים מעורבים חברתית כגון הקמת פסלי "נקודות מפגש" בירושלים ובאוגסבורג, גרמניה. מלץ יוצר עבודות בפיסול וברישום העוסקות בממד המטפיזי והמוסרי בחיי היום-יום. פעמים רבות העבודות. קשורות לתיעוד חייו האישיים, לחברה ולתרבות בסביבתו. הוא רואה עצמו ככרוניקן וצליין עכשווי הנע על מרחב המורכב מאלמנטים חזותיים, ספרותיים ורוחניים.
